John Bowers, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has won a research award from Palo Alto-based HP as part of that company’s second annual HP Labs Innovation research program.

The firm didn’t say how much the award was for. The proposed project is titled “High-Speed, Low-Threshold Hybrid Silicon Evanescent Ring Resonator Lasers.”

HP funded 60 projects from 46 universities in 12 countries. The program is designed to create opportunities for colleges, universities and research institutes to conduct collaborative research with HP.
