Treasurer candidates bank on being the one

The seven candidates for Ventura County treasurer-tax collector include former bankers, a retired judge and the head of the county’s Taxpayers Association.

The crowded field is seeking the position now held by Lawrence Matheney, who is retiring. In addition to collecting property taxes, the Ventura County Treasurer’s Office touches billions of dollars in public money. The treasurer-tax collector oversees the county’s $2 billion investment portfolio and sits on the board that directs the county’s $2.17 billion pension portfolio.

The candidates include Keith McLaughlin, the former chief financial officer at Countrywide Financial Corp., a company at the heart of the subprime loan crisis. Also in the running is Ed Summers, a former Ventura City Council member and former senior vice president at Affinity Bank, the commercial bank taken over by regulators last summer.
