Breaking: FEMA authorizes federal funds for use for Mountain Fire
In an effort to contain the Mountain Fire, which has scorched more than 10,000 acres across Ventura County and burned down more than two dozen homes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the use of federal funds to assist California firefighters.
The fire started on the morning of Nov. 6 near the 7900 block of Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road shortly before 9 a.m. Since then, the fire, due to very high winds, has crossed Highway 118 and is threatening the Camarillo Heights area.
The request for federal funds through the Fire Management Assistance Grant happened around 2:30 p.m.
At the time of the request, the fire threatened approximately 3,500 homes in and around the communities of Somis, Camarillo, and Saticoy, California with a combined population of 30,000. One hundred percent of the threatened homes are primary residences.
The grant will provide federal funding for up to 75% of eligible firefighting costs.
This includes field camps, equipment use, materials, supplies and mobilization and demobilization activities attributed to fighting the fire. For more information on FMAGs, visit fema.gov/assistance/public/fire-management-assistance.
