In response to the Los Angeles Wildfires that have ravaged the county, such as the Palisades Fire which has left thousands of homes and businesses destroyed and many more without electricity and internet connectivity, Dragon Q Energy is stepping up to the challenge.
The Santa Barbara-based company that specializes in battery technology deployed its PowerPole technology to provide critical support to Malibu, an area affected heavily by the Palisades Fire.
Dragon Q’s PowerPole is a battery-operated off-grid power system that uses renewable solar energy to bring reliable electricity to even the most remote parts of the planet, according to the firm, headquartered at the California NanoScience Institute on the UC Santa Barbara campus.
By harnessing the power of solar electricity and battery technology, the company seeks to empower those power-deprived communities, such as ones hurt by devastating natural disasters.
This deployment, announced Jan. 15, offers those affected a place to charge their phones and connect to the internet, helping families stay in touch with loved ones, reach out to insurers, and access relief agencies during this challenging time.
“The PowerPole was designed for moments like this,” said Dan Casey, CEO of Dragon Q Energy.
“Our technology combines our robust battery system, with solar power integration, and internet connectivity to provide reliable solutions where traditional infrastructure fails. Seeing it deployed in real-world circumstances, helping people stay connected and safe, reaffirms our mission to bring innovative energy solutions to those who need them most.”
In order to get this done, Dragon Q partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu to provide critical support through its PowerPole technology.
The Boys & Girls Club offered space within its disaster relief center at its Third Space storefront for residents to connect and recharge.
This partnership helps provide immediate relief to those in need with the PowerPole providing reliable Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, according to the press release.
“With no electricity or Wi-Fi in Malibu, The PowerPole has been a game-changer for our community, because it has given us the ability to reconnect with the world in a time of great need. It’s truly amazing to see it making a real difference,” said Kasey Earnest, CEO, Boys & Girls Club of Malibu.
Casey noted that the fires “presented an unfortunate test case,” it has so far highlighted the PowerPole’s potential to make a real difference in emergency scenarios.
“The Palisades Fire and its impact is catastrophic. During a crisis, Clubs like Boys & Girls Club of Malibu do what they’ve always done—serve as an anchor for their local community. But they can’t do it without partners like Dragon Q Energy to help meet the immediate, practical needs of families and kids, many of whom will have a long road to rebuilding their lives,” Jim Clark, president and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, said in a press release.
Third Space Malibu is a store, gallery, and youth innovation space located in downtown Malibu.
It offers youth, families, and visitors of all ages the chance to explore products from local, sustainable, and social entrepreneurs.
A percentage of all store purchases benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu.
“Boys & Girls Club’s quick response and generosity exemplify the power of community in action,” Casey said.
