UCSB scores $19M in stimulus money
The University of California, Santa Barbara, has landed $19 million in federal stimulus money for new energy research.
The money will come in payments of $2 million to $5 million a year over the next five years. The university said the funding will help it improve technologies for efficient lighting, capturing solar energy and converting heat into energy.
The money came from the U.S. Department of Energy and aims to create jobs in addition to advancing technology. The university said the money will create dozens of research jobs and several support positions.
As part of the new center, UCSB will collaborate with other universities and several government laboratories. The government established 45 similar energy centers across the country, but UCSB was one of only 16 universities to win federal stimulus money.
