Oxnard-based startup GoTek Energy has won its first patent, for its DynaKinetic rotary engine technology.

“We are excited about this issuance of our first GoTek Energy patent and expect many more to follow,” CEO Steve Herbruck said in a June 17 news release.

GoTek’s DynaKinetic engine has no pistons or no valves and valve seats that would degrade without lubrication. That means the engine can easily run on liquid or gaseous fuels, including gasoline, diesel, propane, natural gas or even, in the future, hydrogen, company executives told the Business Times last year.

A typical pickup truck using the DynaKinetic engine can achieve fuel efficiency of more than 30 miles to the gallon, while still being able to haul a boat with ease and switch among fuels, Herbruck said in a June 2013 interview. “If you can’t find natural gas, you push a button and switch over to gasoline,” he said.

The company has said its engine doesn’t share the same problems with high fuel consumption and limited torque that Mazda’s Wankel rotary design did, but rather combines some of the best features of turbine, piston and rotary engines. The fuel-agnostic GoTek engine can propel all sorts of vehicles on land, water and air, the Oxnard firm said, as well as drive stationary power-generation devices for industrial equipment and other uses.
