New staff, new project at the Pacific Coast Business Times

IN THIS ARTICLE

We’ve quietly made some big changes at the Business Times during the past few months, so I thought I’d exercise my editor’s prerogative and introduce our new staff and one of our new projects.

Our staff changes begin with Managing Editor Glenn Rabinowitz. A 25-year veteran of the daily newspaper industry in California and more recently Colorado, Glenn joined our team in May.

He’s taken over the day-to-day news operations and the organization of our main news section and the management of our freelancers, winning the respect of all. He’s also leading the way on digital content initiatives while Special Reports Editor Chris Officer continues to skillfully helm our editorial calendar.

Glenn impressed me from the start. He spent a number of years at the Ventura County Star earlier in his career and he has a wealth of knowledge about the region and about what it takes to have an award-winning publication.

In June, Philip Joens, a graduate of the University of Missouri Journalism School, joined our team as technology editor.

Philip brings terrific training and a lot of enthusiasm to the job but more than that he’s got a strong grounding in the business journal world, having worked last summer at the Los Angeles Business Journal. He’s also becoming part of our KCLU team.

Also in June, we welcomed Manny Araujo, our second Dow Jones News Fund intern in as many years. Manny is a rising senior at California State University Northridge and the training that goes along with his internship was supported by CSUN and the Business Times.

Manny has been working on research for our Region’s Richest special focus section, which publishes in September.

We’re going to be welcoming a new staff member next month when Alex Kacik, a talented journalist with a long association with the Business Times, joins our staff to cover commercial real estate, banking and economic development.

Alex will continue to lead our coverage of the Refugio Oil Spill and will replace Elijah Brumback, who’s moving to New York on a personal and professional adventure. We wish him well.

New project, new dates

Earlier this year we created a highly successful publication that celebrated the 100th anniversary of Jordano’s.

In doing so, we launched a new venture.

The Business Times Legacy Publishing Division will follow on the success of the Jordano’s effort to help other companies and organizations mark their milestone accomplishments.

Publisher Linda le Brock is leading the legacy publishing effort and we are beginning our outreach to companies that might want the help of our designers, writers and printing relationships to tell their stories. You can reach her on email at [email protected].

In addition, we have switched the lineup of two of our popular third quarter special reports.

Forty Under 40 will publish this year in late August, with our annual dinner at the Topa Tower Club scheduled for Sept. 21.

Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies will publish in late September with an Oct. 15 awards reception at Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach. For nominations, email Chris Officer at [email protected].

We’re excited about our staff changes and other new initiatives that we’ll be announcing later this year. Best wishes for a most enjoyable summer.
