Simi Valley contractor sentenced for workers comp fraud
A general contractor in Simi Valley was sentenced March 3 for workers compensation fraud, Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko’s office announced.
David Burgmeier, who owned and operated Burgmeier Construction Company in Simi Valley, pleaded guilty in December to multiple counts of insurance and unemployment fraud. From March 2008 through March 2016, Burgmeier underreported the size of his payroll and the number of his employees to his workers’ compensation insurance company, State Fund, and to the California Employment Development Department, which significantly reduced his business operating costs.
He was sentenced to 24 months of formal probation and ordered to pay $170,875 in restitution to two different stage agencies. The court also imposed a 180-day jail sentence, but that has been stayed for a pending review of further restitution payments. Burgmeier has already paid $45,000 in victim restitution.
