A wind in Clipper

Carpinteria-based Clipper Windpower is not going anywhere.

The wind turbine maker has expanded rapidly and created hundreds of high-paying engineering and finance jobs on the South Coast in recent years. But it’s struggled with losses despite explosive sales, and on Dec. 9, industrial giant United Technologies Corp. agreed to buy a 49.5 percent stake in the firm and provide an infusion of $206 million in new capital.

Doug Pertz, president and chief executive of Clipper, said the partnership has solidified his company’s balance sheet and that he has every intention of keeping — and growing — Clipper’s operations in Carpinteria. About 200 of Clipper’s 750 employees are on the South Coast, including about 90 engineers.
