Port of Hueneme plans to have zero emissions by 2030
The Port of Hueneme plans to have zero emissions by 2030, Port COO Christina Birdsey told the Business Times June 7.
The Port was awarded funding by the California Energy Commission in 2021 to develop a comprehensive zero-emissions blueprint. The initiative involved a detailed technical analysis and outreach project to assess the ZE fuel needs, volumes, and costs necessary for implementation of zero-emission operations.
Birdsey said the Port didn’t want to publicly say when it expected to have zero emissions until it had an actual plan in place to accomplish that.
“Zero emission implementation takes a large amount of planning and engineering and infrastructure,” she said.
It also takes a lot of funding, she said.
But now, the Port has determined through its blueprint and “an analysis of the equipment on site and with our stakeholders that the battery electric equipment can meet our zero emissions goals by 2030,” Birdsey said.
“Everything inside the gate will be operating at zero emissions,” she said. “And that’s really exciting.”
The Port is holding a news conference June 11 to formally unveil the 2030 date.
The announcement will be made at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard as part of the Port’s World Oceans Day.
