Tri-County unemployment rate remains unchanged in November

For the second straight month, the unemployment rate along the Central Coast didn’t see much change, according to the latest data from the California Employment Development Department. 

Released Dec. 20, the unemployment rate of the tri-counties was at 4.36% for the month of November, the same unemployment rate the Central Coast saw in October and up slightly from a 4.3% unemployment rate in September.

No single county on the Central Coast had an unemployment rate above 5% for the month of November.

Ventura County still had the highest unemployment rate in November at 4.9%, the same as it was in October.

Trailing them was Santa Barbara County, which saw its unemployment rate

at 4.3% in November, up slightly from a revised unemployment rate of 4.2% in October.

San Luis Obispo had the lowest unemployment rate along the Central Coast at 3.9%, down from 4% in October.

The Central Coast struggled to add jobs, however, as the tri-county only had a net gain of 700 nonfarming jobs in November, compared to 7,000 the month before.

Santa Barbara County lost 700 nonfarming jobs, 400 of which were in the leisure and hospitality sector and government jobs. 

Ventura County added 1,000 nonfarming jobs, including 1,100 in the trade, transportation and utilites sector while San Luis Obispo added 500 jobs.

As for the state, California’s unemployment rate remained at 5.4% in November.

Five of California’s 11 industry sectors gained jobs in November with Private Education & Health Services leading the way with 13,100 jobs added thanks to significant gains in healthcare-related industry groups.
