California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks has received its largest-ever scholarship donation, a $4.7 million estate gift from a Pacific Palisades educator, the university said Feb. 25.
Thousand Oaks-based California Lutheran University will open a Westlake Village location this year that will house a new business incubator, its graduate business programs and its economic forecasting center.
Gene Lucas, longtime executive vice chancellor of US Santa Barbara and a fixture on campus for more than three decades, will retire at the end of the year, the university said Dec. 10.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo continues to pump out student startups at a steady rate, with a new expense-splitting app for roommates and textbook reselling service both gaining traction on launch.
UC Santa Barbara said Dec. 5 that the U.S. Army has renewed its contract with the university’s Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, providing an additional $48 million over three years to support biology-related research.
The new funds extend a decade of unclassified research in areas such as biotechnology tools, futuristic materials, energy generation and storage, systems and synthetic biology and neuroscience.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is rolling out a new Cybersecurity Center in collaboration with Northup Grumman and Raytheon with an eye toward training security experts for the defense industry and giving all of its engineering students a firmer grasp of how to make their creations secure against hackers.
